Photographing a corporate dinner event - especially when there are high-profile guests present - requires a delicate balance between being in the mix and remaining unobtrusive. As a professional London-based event photographer, I’ve learned that the key to capturing the essence of such intimate gatherings lies in blending into the background while still being ready for those pivotal moments.
Understanding the Event and Its Guests
Before any shoot, it's crucial to understand the tone of the event and the guest profile. Corporate dinners are typically about fostering connections, so the photography should reflect natural and candid moments rather than staged shots.
At Martin Creates, we have calls with clients (person in charge of the event) before an event to ask questions. This helps us understand important things such as the key stakeholders and significant moments in the schedule e.g. speeches and/or awards. This reduces the risk of surprises and not being ready to capture key interactions.
Techniques for Staying Unobtrusive
Being present but unseen is an art in itself.
Here are a few tips to maintain a low profile while ensuring you don’t miss a moment:
Use the Right Equipment: Opt for a mirrorless camera that has a silent shutter feature to avoid disturbing the ambiance. It's also useful to use a zoom lens to capture close-ups from a distance as subtly as possible.
Blend In with Attire: Dressing according to the dress-code - especially in formal settings - helps you blend in and become less noticeable.
Position Strategically: Don't move around the room too much and quickly otherwise you'll draw more attention to yourself.
Choosing which Moments to Capture
At Martin Creates, we're storytellers and we enjoy capturing moments that tell the story of the evening: professional photography of guest arrivals, candid conversations, and highlights like speeches or toasts are all ways to deliver a complete album.
Capturing the dining experience, including beautifully presented dishes and candid dining moments, adds richness to the overall narrative.
Subtle Post-Processing
In post-production, aim to enhance the images while keeping them natural. Adjust lighting and contrast, but avoid over-editing, so the photos reflect the authenticity and professionalism of the event.
By maintaining a balance between presence and discretion, you can capture the true spirit of a corporate dinner event—creating a visual story that feels both elegant and genuine.
