The EIC
In March 2023, I was asked to photograph the last ever coin collection with the late Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy on it. Whilst the conditions of the shoot were not easy, it felt heart-warming to be part of an iconic coin collection release.
When carrying out a photoshoot or video session for such precious items e.g. gold, silver, diamonds, etc., it’s important to consider the value and condition of the item. The client would normally demonstrate how to handle with care or supervise you during the shoot, ensuring that professional guidance and support is there. In this case, handling with special gloves, wearing a mask and not keeping it outside its casing for a long period of time was crucial in order for it not to lose commercial value. This sample was chosen for photography purposes but the expectation was for it to be sold afterwards along with the other units.
Each set was worth £12,000 at pre-sale value. There are also laws around minting and selling coins which a client will be mindful of such as the mintage, weight, launch date and other details. The timing and launch date are details that affect the photography and videoing process in particular. Often this means the shoot must be punctual, and turnaround times on editing must be as fast as possible so that marketing comms / assets can be deployed into the channels almost the same day. I also led the shoot inside the company’s on-site safe room with props and styling organised well in advance.
The outcome of the shoot couldn’t have been more positive for The Queen’s Portrait Collection. Not only was the brief completed on time and in full, but it sold out in less than a day.
